CPW Firearms Safety Program
August 28 @ 5:00 pm – August 29 @ 4:00 pm
Effective August 1, 2026, Colorado mandates a 12-hour safety course for any resident that would like to purchase a firearm from the Specified Semiautomatic Firearms (SSF) list. https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/sb25-003 This includes most rifles, a good amount of pistols, and various other platforms. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) was charged with designing this course, and we were asked to offer it to you.
Although we don’t agree that this law will have any considerable effect in controlling gun violence, minimizing accidents, or keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals, and we recognize that this is an attempt to make it more difficult and expensive for law-abiding gun owners to be able to legally purchase common hunting, sporting, and self defense firearms, CPW has made it clear that trainers like us are keeping the citizens of Colorado armed. We have no intention of making it any harder or cost-prohibitive than it has to be, so we are offering this course for as little as we can, as often as we can, and in the easiest way to accommodate our local customers.
Because we are clever, this SB25-003 compliant training will be offered for $25/day over 3 sections. Friday we’ll do the first third, and then the second two sections on Saturday. There’s no live-fire component to the training, but there is a written exam and a mandatory “demonstration of safety” which will comprise of a few different skills. We hope this is the lowest price in town. We are limited on space, so get signed up, and get legal for the next 5 years.
Here’s a link to the SSF list and the process to apply for the eligibility card. Note that you must follow these steps before registering for the class:
- Create a user login on the CPW Firearms Safety System (FSS) website
- Get a third party background check from a company like MyTruSeal. It takes a day or two to complete.
- Apply with the county sheriff’s office where you live. Boulder County, Larimer County, and Weld County Applications linked here.
When you have all of your approvals, you may register for the class. We will need your student number to put you on our roster. After you pass the class, we enter you into the system as a valid SSF purchaser in Colorado, so your second amendment rights can be restored, and after a mandatory waiting period and another background check, you can take your legally purchased and acquired firearm home with you!
